Primera División

NB: The season is divided into four phases, Torneo de Verano, Torneo Apertura,
Torneo Clausura, and Supercopa. The first phase is the Torneo de Verano where
all the teams are divided into two groups and play each team in their group
twice at home and away. The winner of each group will qualify to a one match
final which will be played on neutral ground. The second and third stages are
two smaller Apertura and Clausura tournaments of 15 games each. Each team will
play all other teams once during the Apertura tournament and during the Clausura
tournament in a reversed order for a total of 30 matches. Points earned during
the Apertura will not carry over during the Clausura. The winners of the Apertura
and Clausura stages will qualify for the fourth stage of the tournament, La Supercopa.
During La Supercopa the championship will be contested over two legs. If the teams
are tied in points a third match on neutral ground will be played to decide the
national champion. If a team wins both the Apertura and Clausura tournaments then
it will be automatically declared the tournament champion and the runner-ups from
the Apertura and Clausura tournaments will play off to enter the Copa Libertadores
2018 group stage. The two teams with the least amount of points at the end of the
third stage will be relegated. The champions, runners-up, and Torneo de Verano
champions advance to the Copa Libertadores.
